Supporting Children with Learning Differences in Houston: Reflections from The Joy School Annual Luncheon
On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, I had the honor of attending The Joy School Annual Luncheon at River Oaks Country Club. From registration at 11:00 a.m. to the luncheon held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the afternoon was a powerful reminder of how early support, education, and community profoundly shape children’s lives here in Houston.
The Annual Luncheon is The Joy School’s only social fundraising event of the year, making it both a celebration and a vital source of support for a school that has transformed the academic and emotional trajectories of countless children and families across our city.
Why Supporting Learning Differences Matters, Personally and Professionally
This event was deeply meaningful to me, both professionally and personally.
I was diagnosed with dyslexia in late elementary school, at a time when awareness, resources, and educational support for learning differences were nothing like what we understand and offer today. I know firsthand how confusing, frustrating, and isolating it can feel to struggle in a classroom that doesn’t yet understand how your brain works.
Experiencing learning differences affects far more than academics, it impacts confidence, self-esteem, identity, and long-term mental health. Without the right support, children may internalize the belief that they are “behind” or “not capable,” when in reality, they simply learn differently.
This is exactly why schools like The Joy School matter so much, and why events like this luncheon are so important for our Houston community.
A Houston Community That Invests in Children
The Joy School is dedicated to helping children with learning differences build confidence, resilience, and academic success through individualized, compassionate education. From a mental health perspective, this kind of early, specialized support is truly transformative.
Both research and clinical experience consistently show that early intervention and attuned educational environments improve:
Emotional regulation
Self-confidence and self-worth
Academic engagement
Long-term mental health outcomes
Learning differences are not deficits. They are differences that deserve understanding, flexibility, and support, and Houston is fortunate to have institutions that recognize this.
A Powerful Message from Karol Musher
This year’s featured luncheon speaker was Karol Musher, M.A., CCC-SLP, whose work has touched generations of children and families across Houston.
In her talk, “What I’ve Learned About Learning,” Karol reflected on more than five decades of experience helping students, from pre-school through college, learn to read, write, and communicate effectively. Her work at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine has inspired educators and families alike.
Her message reinforced a powerful truth: when children receive the right support at the right time, their potential expands exponentially.
Seeing What’s Possible: A Joy School Success Story
One of the most moving moments of the luncheon was hearing from Miller Friedman, a proud Joy School graduate, who shared his journey of navigating learning differences and thriving beyond the classroom.
Miller spoke about how the support he received at The Joy School shaped not only his academic experience, but also his confidence, perseverance, and belief in himself. Today, he has built a successful real estate business and has also founded a nonprofit benefiting animals, combining entrepreneurship with purpose and compassion.
His story was a powerful reminder that learning differences do not limit potential, lack of support does. When children are understood and empowered early, they grow into adults who lead, innovate, and give back to their communities.
As someone who experienced learning differences firsthand, Miller’s story resonated deeply with me and underscored the long-term impact of the work The Joy School does every day.
Learning Differences, Confidence, and Mental Health
When children are supported early and appropriately, the benefits extend far beyond academics. They learn:
How to advocate for themselves
That their brain is not broken, just different
That struggle does not define their worth
These lessons form the foundation for lifelong resilience, emotional wellbeing, and self-trust. At Well Mind Body Integrative Psychotherapy & Wellness, we see every day how early experiences with learning and support shape adult anxiety, self-esteem, and identity.
Grateful for a City That Shows Up
I left The Joy School Annual Luncheon feeling deeply grateful to be part of a Houston community that values inclusion, education, and the belief that every child deserves to be supported, understood, and empowered.
Thank you to The Joy School, the organizers, sponsors, and everyone who continues to invest in children and families across Houston. The impact of this work extends far beyond one afternoon, it shapes lives for decades to come.
