Supporting Children, Families, and Mental Health in Houston: A Night at the JCC Children’s Scholarship Ball

Last night, I had the honor of attending the JCC Children’s Scholarship Ball at The Westin Galleria Houston. An inspiring evening that highlighted the profound connection between community support, early intervention, and long-term mental health.

The evening honored Joe Kaplan and Murray Kalmin, whose leadership and dedication have positively shaped the lives of countless children and families across Houston.

Why Early Support Matters for Children’s Mental Health

Proceeds from the Ball benefit the Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund, an initiative of the Jewish Community Center of Houston. This fund provides financial assistance to children of all backgrounds and religions, ensuring access to:

  • Early childhood education

  • Intervention and enrichment programs

  • Summer camps that promote emotional growth, confidence, and connection

Each year, more than 100 children benefit from this fund, receiving support that plays a critical role in emotional regulation, resilience, and long-term mental wellbeing.

From a mental health perspective, this kind of early access matters deeply. Research consistently shows that early environments, relationships, and support systems shape how children manage stress, build self-esteem, and navigate challenges later in life.

Community, Prevention, and Integrative Mental Health

At Well Mind Body Integrative Psychotherapy & Wellness, we believe mental health care doesn’t start in crisis, it starts with prevention, access, and community involvement.

As part of the evening’s fundraising efforts, we were proud to donate a MaxGen The Works Test to the auction. This advanced nutrigenomics and wellness assessment provides insight into how genetics influence:

  • Stress response and nervous system regulation

  • Mental health and neurotransmitter pathways

  • Inflammation, detoxification, and resilience

Supporting this event aligned naturally with our mission: personalized, integrative care that supports mental health across the lifespan, from childhood through adulthood.

Mental Health Is Built in Community

Events like the JCC Children’s Scholarship Ball are a powerful reminder that mental health is not just individual, it is collective.

When communities invest in children, education, and inclusive support, we create conditions where families can thrive emotionally, socially, and psychologically. This is the foundation of long-term wellness.

As a Houston-based integrative psychotherapy practice, we are grateful to be part of a city that values access, compassion, and proactive support.
