What is a Superbill and How Can It Help You Get Reimbursed for Therapy?
Here at Well Mind Body, we are a team of licensed mental health professionals dedicated to providing compassionate, trauma-informed care for individuals, couples, and families. We operate as out-of-network providers, which means we do not bill insurance directly. Instead, clients pay for sessions at the time of service.
However, we know that therapy is an important investment, and we want to help make it as affordable as possible. That is why we provide superbills upon request.
What is a Superbill?
A superbill is an itemized receipt that contains all the information your insurance company needs to process a reimbursement claim for counseling services. It includes details such as your provider’s credentials, the type of service provided, the session date, and the associated billing and diagnostic codes.
What is the Difference Between an Invoice and a Superbill?
An invoice is simply a receipt showing what you paid for your therapy session. While helpful for your own records, it typically does not have enough information for insurance reimbursement. A superbill, on the other hand, is a specialized document that includes all of the required details for insurance companies to process a claim, such as CPT codes, diagnostic codes, and your provider’s NPI number. If you plan to seek reimbursement for out-of-network therapy, you will need a superbill rather than a standard invoice.
How Does It Work?
After paying for your session at Well Mind Body, you can request a superbill from us. You then submit the superbill directly to your insurance company. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health coverage, your insurance company may reimburse you for a portion of the session cost.
How Do I Know if I Have Out-of-Network Coverage?
Because every insurance plan is different, we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to ask the following questions:
Do I have out-of-network benefits for mental health counseling?
What percentage of the session cost will be reimbursed?
Is there a deductible I must meet before reimbursement begins?
How do I submit a superbill for reimbursement?
Why Work With an Out-of-Network Provider?
Choosing an out-of-network provider gives you more control over your care. It allows you to work with the therapist who is the best fit for your needs, rather than being limited to an insurance company’s network. It also keeps your mental health records more private, as fewer details about your treatment are shared with your insurer.
At Well Mind Body, we believe therapy should be personal, flexible, and client-centered. Providing superbills allows us to offer high-quality, individualized care while still giving you the option to seek reimbursement.
