Understanding Trauma & Grief in Children

In the aftermath of a traumatic event, especially one involving fear, uncertainty, or loss, children and teens may experience emotional, physical, and behavioral changes.

Common signs of trauma or grief in children include:

  • Nightmares or sleep disturbances

  • Separation anxiety or clinginess

  • Emotional outbursts or withdrawal

  • Regressive behaviors (bedwetting, thumb-sucking)

  • Somatic complaints (headaches, stomachaches)

Our clinicians are trained to recognize, validate, and gently treat trauma responses in children, teens, and adults.

Books to Help Children Understand Grief & Loss

Reading with your child is a powerful way to create safety, name emotions, and begin healing together. Here are some therapist-recommended books to support grieving children:

  • The Invisible String by Patrice Karst

  • When Dinosaurs Die by Laurie Krasny Brown

  • Ida, Always by Caron Levis

  • The Memory Box by Joanna Rowland

  • Tear Soup by Pat Schwiebert & Chuck DeKlyen

These books gently address themes of death, separation, and remembrance in ways that are developmentally appropriate and comforting.
